Chile trip days 5-8

Here is a high school located in a small town. The population of high schools in this kind of town comes largely from students who live in the surrounding region, sometimes living hours away from their home to attend school.

This is a small town that exists only because people have always lived here. There is no industry in the area, so the men leave the area to work in the mines for about a week, then return for about a week.

Even though the water is very cold year-round, the government was building a beach here alongside a fishing town by bringing in the sand.

A sunset over the ocean, you can only see one on the Pacific from the Americas.

These are shots of Valpariso and its 42 surrounding hills. The wealthy part of the population lives in the lower part of the city near the ocean. The poorer part of the population lives up on the 42 hills that look down on the old city.

Along the ocean in northern Chile, much of the power is supplied by large wind farms like these.

Dams like the one we are standing on here are part of the system that supplies water to the agricultural livelihood in the valleys below. Some of the areas in the north may only have rain a couple times a year, but they are still able to grow crops.

This could be the best ice cream ever made.
